ASEAN CommunityThe ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) will be applied on December 2015. Characters of AEC described as (a) a single market and production base, (b) a highly competitive economic region, (c) a region of equitable economic development, and (d) a region fully integrated into the global economy.

It is clear that AEC areas of cooperation include human resources development, closer consultation on macroeconomic and financial policies. There will be a plan for integrating industries across the region.

Therefore, the AEC will transform ASEAN into a region with free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labour and freer flow of capital.

On mobility skilled labour, there are at least eight field will be involved. These professions will be included in free movement labour. ASEAN member countries should accept these professionals for their career and business. The AEC would pave the way for the free flow of skilled labour in eight professions comprising doctors, dentists, nurses, engineers, architects, accountants, surveyors and the tourism industry.

Indonesia as some people predicted could be market for other countries member. As the most populous country in ASEAN, there will huge opportunity in the country for advance skilled labour from Singapore, Malaysia and even Philippines. In fact some of secondary teacher from Philippines has been in Indonesia teaching for international schools particularly around Jakarta.

In one hand, open market in ASEAN for certain give additional competition for locals as foreigners skilled labour come in. Consumer will gain benefit because services could be much better and price of the services may be declined.

However, given the fact that some member ASEAN has disadvantage position compare to others, competition of skilled labour market might be regulated. Hence, the host country may impose regulation such as the need to have local language skill.

To sum up as global competition becoming fiercer, AEC will open locals to reality that there is no turn back except to fight in open market. These will influence education, awareness of the need high skilled labour and also chance to enter other market in different countries freely. ***
